Latest hurricane-related insurance suits filed in Jefferson County

A total of six suits over hurricane damage claims were filed against insurance companies in Jefferson County District Court during the week of May 25 through May 29.

The following suits were filed relating to Hurricane Ike:

  • Doug Gonzalez, doing business as Doug's Highway 90 Auto Salvage, alleges Ewing Insurance Services failed to procure windstorm, hurricane and hail coverage for Gonzalez's business, even though he paid for it. As a result, Gonzalez says he was denied a claim he made from damages to his business under his windstorm policy. Gonzalez is represented by Rocky Lawdermilk of Beaumont.   • Blanch Comeaux of 1415 Luling Ave. in Nederland alleges State Farm Lloyds denied her claim for roof, water, wind, contents and structural damages after Hurricane Ike struck on Sept. 13.   • Michael Barrera of 2840 Russell Circle in Port Neches alleges Texas Windstorm Insurance Association denied his claim for damages caused to his property after Hurricane Ike struck on Sept. 13. Barrera is represented by William F. Merlin and Javier Delgado of The Merlin Law Group in Houston. Derrick Fisher of the Law Offices of Derrick Fisher in Pasadena and Jill H. Bowman and Jonathan B.   • Kathy Hardy of 3570 Kipling in Beaumont alleges Voyager Indemnity Insurance Company and Assurant Specialty Property denied her claim for roof, water, wind and structural damages caused to her property after Hurricane Ike struck on Sept. 13. Voyager and Assurant denied the claim after assigning Southwest Adjuster of Texas and adjusters Harry Conner, Brian Nagel and Gregory Hill to investigate. Hardy is represented by Michael R.   • Clytie Ewest of 724 South 23rd St. in Nederland alleges Assurant and American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida denied her claim for roof, water, wind and foundation damages caused to her property after Hurricane Ike struck on Sept. 13. Assurant and American Bankers assigned adjuster Carolyn Fondren to investigate. Ewest is represented by Michael R. Ramsey and Gregory F. Cox of The Mostyn Law Firm in Beaumont and by J.   • Sarah Duke, doing business as Kiddie Korner Day Care, alleges Stonington Insurance Company and Clay Mathis Insurance denied her claim for business income loss after Hurricane Ike struck on Sept. 13. Duke claims she was required to shut down her day care from Sept. 11 though Sept. 20 because of a mandatory evacuation. Her claim was denied because she did not have windstorm insurance, even though she was led to believe she did, according to the complaint. Duke is represented by E.
