Wal-Mart sued over slip-and-fall at Port Arthur store

A Port Arthur woman is suing Wal-Mart, claiming she slipped on a puddle of water that had accumulated on the floor under a leaking roof.

Valerie Jackson filed a lawsuit June 4 in Jefferson County District Court against Wal-Mart Stores East Inc.

Jackson says she was shopping at the Wal-Mart located at 8585 Memorial Blvd. in Port Arthur when she fell on a puddle of water that had formed under a leaking roof.

Because of her fall, Jackson claims she incurred medical costs and experienced physical pain, suffering, mental anguish, physical impairment and fear of a future disease.

Wal-Mart negligently permitted the floor to become slippery with rainwater, failed to remove the water, failed to provide adequate lighting in the area of the water and failed to warn Jackson of the slippery floor, according to the complaint.

Jackson is seeking an unspecified judgment within the jurisdictional limits of Jefferson County District Court, plus pre-judgment interest at the maximum rate allowed by law, post-judgment interest at the legal rate, costs and other relief to which she may be entitled.

Antoine L. Freeman of Port Arthur will be representing her.

The case has been assigned to Judge Gary Sanderson, 60th District Court.

Jefferson County District Court case number: B184-219.
