Couple sues driver over rear-end collision

A man and his wife have filed suit against the driver they say rear-ended them as they were driving on a highway.

Rufus and Mary Carolyn Holt claim they were driving east on Highway 73 on Jan. 17, 2008, when their vehicle was struck from behind by defendant Ruben Dorantes.

Because of the accident, the Holts claim they suffered injuries to their heads and necks, sustained back pain, incurred medical costs and experienced physical pain and suffering, according to the complaint filed Dec. 17 in Jefferson County District Court.

The complaint alleges Dorantes negligently failed to maintain control of his vehicle, failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to timely apply his brakes, drove in a negligent manner, was inattentive and followed the Holts too closely.

The Holts are seeking an unspecified judgment, plus costs, interest and other relief to which they may be entitled.

Douglas Sikes of Provost and Umphrey Law Firm in Beaumont will be representing them.

The case has been assigned to Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court.

Jefferson County District Court case number: D185-494.
