Makeshift gangway leads to seaman's injury, lawsuit

GALVESTON - After sustaining injuries more than six months ago while working on an inland barge, a Louisiana seaman has filed suit against the barge's owners.

Jude Lewis was a borrowed seaman for Axxis Drilling Inc. and Century Exploration Houston Inc. assigned to the Axxis Justice.

Lewis's personal injury lawsuit, filed June 7 in Galveston County Court No. 2, explains that on Nov. 19, 2009, the plaintiff hurt his back, knee, and other parts of his body while he attempted to move from the Axxis Justice to another vessel.

Court papers claim he tried to move along a ladder used as a makeshift gangway.

Lewis says that he consequently suffered physical pain, mental anguish, and other medical problems.

He seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

Arnold & Itkin LLP is representing the plaintiff.

The case has been assigned to Galveston County Court No. 2 Judge C.G. "Trey" Dibrell III.
