Man sues to redeem property investment

GALVESTON - A Galveston County man seeks to recover money he spent on property he purchased last year after its value soared, recent court documents say.

Kenneth Bleakney's lawsuit states that J. L. Watts Co. exercised its right to redeem the property in question after the plaintiff spent more than $100,000 making improvements.

The suit was filed July 8 in Galveston County District Court.

Bleakney bought the property in question by Sheriff's Deed Under Order of Sale on Jan. 13, 2009.

"The plaintiff sues the defendant for quantum meruit and unjust enrichment," the original petition says.

Bleakney consequently seeks monetary damages and a jury trial.

Attorney Timothy Hootman of Houston is representing the plaintiff.

Galveston County 212th District Court Judge Susan Criss is presiding over the case.
