Broken step in unlit stairway leads to suit against apartment complex

Claiming a broken step in an unlit stairway caused her to trip and fall, Michigan resident Agnes Standoak has filed suit against a Beaumont apartment complex.

The suit was filed Jan. 3 in Jefferson County district Court and names Caliber Properties, Parigi Property Management and Jeremiah Brammer as defendants.

According to the petition, on Jan. 5, 2009, Standoak was leaving her niece's home at Calder West Apartments at 6325 Calder Ave. in Beaumont when she fell down a flight of stairs.

"Plaintiff's fall occurred due to a broken step on the dark, unlit stairway," the suit states. "Brammer was the manager of the property."

Standoak claims all the defendants negligently failed to inspect and maintain the property in a reasonable safe condition.

She is suing for her alleged past and future mental anguish, lost wages, impairment and medical expenses.

Beaumont attorney Jonathan Juhan is representing her.

The case has been assigned to Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court.
