The threat of ice and dangerous conditions has prompted Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick to close county offices, including the courthouses in Beaumont and Port Arthur, on Friday, Feb. 4.
"After consulting with the National Weather Service, local school district
superintendents, Lamar University and emergency management officials, I
have determined that an emergency closure of the Jefferson County
Courthouse is warranted on Friday, February 4, 2011 between the hours of
8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. All regular schedules will resume at 5:00 p.m.," Branick announced.
Only essential personnel -- including law enforcement, corrections, road and bridge crews and the Emergency Management Department -- will be exempted from the effect of the closure.
The National Weather Service predicts that Thursday night through mid-
day Friday roads and bridges will be icy with the probability of a snow
covering making driving conditions extremely hazardous.
"We urge members of the public to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary," Branick said. "In the event that vehicular travel is required we recommend proceeding
with extreme caution and low speed."
He said power outages are likely, and recommends that those who remain indoors turn off all unnecessary appliances and make every effort to conserve energy.
