Woman seeks $500K from contractor over faulty stair construction

GALVESTON – Galveston resident Arlene Anderwald is seeking $500,000 from Spring contractor Arthur Hale after she reportedly fractured her leg descending some stairs at her home.

Anderwald's lawsuit claims that Hale, doing business as Arthur Hale General Home Repair, constructed the steps in question in a negligent manner.

"Due to the defendant's work, the defendant created and allowed a dangerous and hazardous condition to exist in and about the defendant's home and property," the original petition says.

The suit was filed March 2 in Galveston County District Court.

Hale had inexplicably built steps which were not uniform in overall dimensions and inconsistent with representations he made to the complainant, recent court documents argue.

Anderwald adds that the defendant failed to comply with city of Galveston code regulations.

Consequently, she seeks approximately $500,000 in damages and a jury trial.

Attorney Michael G. Martinez of Friendswood is representing the plaintiff, and Galveston County 56th District Court Judge Lonnie Cox is presiding over the case.
