Asbestos suit faults 10 companies for man's illness

Texas residents Edgar and Mary Hemphill have filed suit against Chevron USA and nine other companies, alleging the defendants exposed him to asbestos during his career as a carpenter.

The suit was filed May 4 in Jefferson County District Court. The other defendants named in the suit include Citgo, DuPont, ExxonMobil, Huntsman Petrochemical, Neches Butane, Mobil Chemical, Mobil Oil, Oxy USA, Texaco and Total Petrochemicals.

According to the lawsuit, Edgar Hemphill was exposed to asbestos dust and fibers while working as a carpenter on the defendants' premises. He now allegedly suffers from an unspecified asbestos illness.

The suit alleges the defendants knew of the dangers of asbestos products yet failed to warn laborers, like Hemphill, of the dangers

Hemphill is suing for his alleged past and future medical expenses, mental anguish, pain, impairment, disfigurement and lost wages, plus all court costs.

His wife is suing for loss of consortium.

Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
