Benzene suit filed against Union Oil

Hyde

The widow of Jasper Snyder Sr. has filed suit against Union Oil of California and Chevron USA, alleging the defendants exposed her late husband to toxic benzene.

Martha Snyder filed the suit May 23 in Jefferson County District Court.

Court records show that Snyder worked at Union Oil's Jefferson County premises. During his employment he was exposed to benzene.

"As a result of such exposure, Jasper Snyder Sr. developed chronic lymphocytic leukemia, from which he died a painful and terrible death on Nov. 12, 2010," the suit states.

The suit alleges the defendants new for decades the benzene could cause cancer but still allowed their employees to work with benzene products.

The plaintiff is suing for all wrongful death damages allowable under law.

Beaumont attorney Keith Hyde of Provost Umphrey represents the plaintiff.

Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court, has been assigned to the case.
