Mom claims attack made son afraid of dogs

GALVESTON - For many Stephen King fans, "Cujo" was a very scary novel from start for finish. But for Brazoria County resident Kendra Carey and her child, life imitated art.

Kendra Carey is suing League City local Jacky Howarth after Howarth's Rottweiler, who shares the same name as the book and subsequent blockbuster film, reportedly attacked Anthony Carey last year, stating the ordeal instilled a fear of canines in the boy.

Court papers were filed Nov. 29 in Galveston County Court at Law No. 2.

Anthony Carey is also a complainant in the case.

According to the original petition, the defendant invited the kid to his residence on Dec. 23, 2010, to jump on a trampoline in his back yard.

"Upon entering the back yard, Anthony was attacked by the defendant's dog, which upon information and belief, is a large Rottweiler named 'Cujo'," the suit says.

"The subject dog jumped on Anthony and knocked him down to the ground and began biting Anthony on his left arm."

It further explains that the boy attempted to scale the fence to escape, but the dog bit him again on his left leg.

He was taken to Clear Lake Hospital where he was treated for multiple lacerations on both arms and the aforementioned leg, the suit says.

The complaint insists Howarth bears responsibility for the Rottweiler's alleged conduct and actions, citing strict and premises liabilities.

Consequently, the plaintiffs seek unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

They are represented by The Law Office of Robert D. Clements Jr. & Assoc.

The case has been assigned to Galveston County Court at Law No. 2 Judge Barbara Roberts.
