Woman sues apartments after staircase collapse

Area resident Donja Stewart has filed suit against the owners of Southern Colonial Apartments, claiming a wooden staircase collapsed as she walked down it.

The suit was filed Dec. 16 in Jefferson County District Court and also names Cordel Vernon and Edward McIntyre as defendants.

According to the lawsuit, on Feb. 16, 2010, Stewart was at the Beaumont apartment complex and was proceeding down a wooden staircase when it collapsed without warning, injuring her.

In her suit, Stewart alleges the defendants negligently failed to inspect and maintain the premises.

The plaintiff is suing for her alleged past and future medical expenses, mental anguish, pain, impairment, disfigurement and lost wages, plus all court costs.

San Antonio attorney John Mastin represents her.

Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court, is assigned to the case.
