Couple sues driver for running red light

Two Jefferson County residents claim they suffered various injuries after a driver failed to obey a red light and flung their vehicle into a traffic light pole.

Stoney and Marissa Brooks filed a lawsuit Feb. 25 in Jefferson County District Court against Taylor Johnson.

In their complaint, the Brooks allege they were driving north in the 1000 block of Interstate 10 Service Road when Johnson, who was driving west in the 3800 block of College Street, failed to stop at a red light and struck their vehicle.

“The impact threw Plaintiffs’ vehicle into a traffic light pole device,” the suit states.

Because of the collision, the Brooks incurred medical costs; experienced mental anguish, physical pain, suffering and disability; and lost their enjoyment of life, the complaint says. They also claim they lost wages and their earning capacities and suffered physical impairment.

The Brooks blame Johnson for causing the collision, saying she negligently failed to yield the right-of-way and drove inattentively.

In their complaint, the Brooks seek a judgment for damages in excess of the minimum jurisdictional limits of Jefferson County District Court, plus costs, pre- and post-judgment interest and other relief the court deems just.

Clay Dugas and Reginald Blakeley of Beaumont will be representing them.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
