GALVESTON - A Galveston County judge who has been in the midst of controversy for quite some time was recently arrested and indicted by a local Grand Jury.
Galveston County Court at Law No. 3 Judge Christopher Dupuy faces eight criminal counts arising from allegations he abused his power.
According to the indictments, Dupuy oppressed attorneys, including one representing his ex-wife in an ongoing divorce case, as well as used county equipment for his personal use.
Dupuy is also the target of a lawsuit filed in the Galveston County 10th District Court that seeks his ouster from the judgeship.
The suit filed May 22 echoes the indictments, but also additionally accuses Dupuy of making threats toward the district clerk.
Texas law requires the county attorney to act as lead prosecutor, but since Galveston County does not have the position, Galveston County 10th District Court Judge Kerry L. Neves tabbed the Texas Attorney General's Office to prosecute the case.
Meanwhile, Dupuy, who is reportedly out on bond, is allowed to remain on the bench.
A hearing to determine whether he should be removed is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., June 7.
Dupuy assumed the Court at Law No. 3 seat in the November 2010 elections by defeating incumbent Roy Quintanilla with 59 per cent of the vote.
