Glen Morgan sues over taxes on airplane hangar, again

Once again, Beaumont attorney Glen Morgan is suing the Jefferson County Appraisal District, seeking to keep the entity from taxing his private airplane hanger.

In 2006, Morgan sued the JCAD, claiming the hangar he leased was exempt from ad valorem taxes and that the county had appraised the property above its cash market value.

That case went to trial on Aug. 21, 2012, in Judge Donald Floyd’s 172nd District Court. According to the charge of the jury, jurors determined that the market value of the hangar at $10,752.

It was appraised again for the same amount. In the new suit, Morgan still maintains the property at Jack Brooks Regional Airport is owned by Jefferson County and as such not subject to taxation.

“Plaintiff does not own the property but merely has the right to use the property pursuant to an operating lease,” the suit states, adding that the property’s appraised value is excessive and unlawful.

Morgan is seeking a court judgment ordering that the county own the property.

Reaud Morgan & Quinn attorney Taylor Miller represents him.

Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court, is assigned to the case.
