Macy’s sues county over property taxes

Asserting the appraised value of their property exceeds market value, Macy’s Retail Holdings and Macy’s Texas have filed suit against the Jefferson County Appraisal District.

The suit was filed Aug. 26 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, the appraised value of the property in question exceeds market value and is therefore unlawful.

“The unlawful appraised value causes imposition of a tax on the property exceeding the lawful amount thus injuring plaintiffs,” the suit states.

Macy’s is requesting that the court determine the median appraised value of comparable properties.

The company is also seeking an award of attorney’s fees.

Austin attorney Mark Hutcheson of Popp Hutcheson represents the plaintiffs.

Judge Gary Sanderson, 60th District Court, is assigned to the case.

Case No. B194-672
