Damage from leaking air conditioner results in lawsuit

Two Jefferson County residents are suing after a faulty air conditioner caused damage to their property.

Scott Holtmeyer and Annette Holtmeyer filed a lawsuit Sept. 25 in the District Court of Jefferson County against Texas Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Co. and Reed Service Co., citing violation of the Texas Insurance Code, fraud and deceptive trade practices.

According to the filing, the Holtmeyers own property on Harrison Street in Beaumont, which is insured by Texas Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Co.

On Sept. 14, 2011, the plaintiffs purchased a new air conditioning unit from Reed Service Co., which was installed by the same company on Oct. 3. The unit was improperly installed, causing water damage from the leaking unit, according to the complaint. The plaintiffs claim they have failed to receive proper compensation from their insurance company needed to pay for the repairs caused by the faulty unit.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages in between $100,000 and $200,000. They are being represented by Beaumont attorney Michael R. Ramsey of the Mostyn Law Firm.

The case has been assigned to Judge Gary Sanderson.
