GALVESTON - A local state district judge is leaving the bench to run for another public office.

Galveston County 212th District Court Judge Susan Criss plans to resign to compete in the race for District 23 of the Texas House of Representatives.

Criss reportedly notified Gov. Rick Perry in writing of her intent to leave the judgeship she held since 1999.

Incumbent District 23 seat holder A. Craig Eiland, D-Galveston, announced during a tearful personal privilege speech on the House floor last May that he is not seeking re-election when his term ends in 2014 citing the difficulty of being away from his family.

The district comprises of eastern Galveston County and all of Chambers County.

Criss is looking to be the second person in her family to be a state representative.

Her father, Galveston County Democratic Party Chairman Lloyd Criss, was a state representative from District 25.
