The team from Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School in Beaumont is the winner of the 2014 Region V Mock Trial Competition.
The 35th annual High School Mock Trial Competition was held Feb. 15 at the Jefferson County Courthouse.
The team received a $2,500 scholarship to travel to the state competition in Dallas, March 6-9. The team members are Shaina Escebedo, Anna Fielder, Emilie Fisher, Nykeia Jones, Emily Lee, Hannah McMahon, Aman Panjwani, Krishna Singh and Thomas Waddill.
Coaches included Faculty Advisor Aaron Kelley, U.S. Magistrate Judge Zack Hawthorn, U.S. District Court Judge Marcia Crone.
The team will be recognized and awarded a trophy at the annual Law Day ceremony at 10 a.m., Friday, May 2 at the Jefferson County Courthouse.
Five area high schools participated, West Brook, Central, Kelly, Vidor and Memorial.
The purpose of the event is to teach high school students about the law and its role in society as well as to encourage students to pursue a career in the legal field.
The student awarded Best Speaker was Aaron Armstrong of Central High School in Beaumont. He will receive a $500 scholarship.
Best Witness was awarded to Krishna Singh of Kelly, who will receive a $300 scholarship.
