AUSTIN (Legal Newsline) – With the runoff election only two weeks away, endorsements from prominent Texas figures are starting to roll in for Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.
Dewhurst lost by a double-digit margin to state Sen. Dan Patrick, a Houston conservative radio jockey, in the March 4 primary. Patrick captured 550,769 votes for 41.45 percent of the total vote – exceeding Dewhurst’s 28.31 percent vote total.
Although the primary was not close, influential Texans are still backing Dewhurst, with the latest endorsement coming Wednesday from six past Texas Federation of Republican Women presidents and more than 150 TFRW members.
“I have known David Dewhurst for many years and have always found him to be a man of honesty, integrity and fairness,” said Dianne Thompson, a former TFRW and National Federation of Republican Women president. “It is my honor, as past president of the NFRW, to endorse David Dewhurst.”
A week earlier, Dewhurst received endorsements from former Congressman Ron Paul and Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, a former opponent who finished last in the primary race for lieutenant governor.
On Tuesday the Dewhurst campaign released a video featuring Patterson, in which he says, “Dan is not the man” while discussing Patrick’s alleged “checkered” past.
