Hampton Inn challenges property appraisal for Port Arthur location

A national hotel chain with a location in Port Arthur is suing the Jefferson County Appraisal District, alleging an illegally high property appraisal.

Hampton Inn & Suites filed the lawsuit Sept. 25 in Jefferson County District Court against the Jefferson County Appraisal District.

Hampton Inn, at 7660 Memorial Blvd., alleges the property was appraised unequally for tax year 2015 and is therefore unlawful. The plaintiff requests the court determine the value and reduce the appraised value to the equal and uniform value as authorized by the Texas Tax Code.

The plaintiff proposes to pay the greater of one-half of the tax due the value of the property as determined by the appraisal review board.

Hampton Inn & Suites further asks that the court enter all orders necessary to ensure equal treatment and that it recover court costs and attorney fees. It is represented by attorneys Gregory M. Hart and James E. Popp of Popp Hutcheson in Austin.
