Beaumont woman blames Twin Star International after heater fire destroyed home

A Beaumont woman is suing a Florida company, alleging negligence after a defective heater caused a fire in her home.

Sheryl Jackson filed a lawsuit Nov. 4 in Jefferson County District Court against Twin Star International of Delray Beach, Fla. alleging products liability, negligence and gross negligence.

According to the complaint, on Feb. 13, 2014, Jackson sustained total losses to her vehicle and residence at 862 Porter St., Beaumont, due to a fire caused by a faulty and defective Duraflame heater manufactured and sold by Twin Star International.

On March 11, 2014, the suit says, Twin Star International mailed a letter to Jackson about a recall it was issuing on the defective heater, but the suit alleges the company knew of the product defect before the fire occurred. The suit says the defendant was negligent grossly negligent and liable for selling a defective and unreasonably dangerous product.

Jackson seeks the full value of her losses, including actual, consequential and statutory damages and enhancements, as well as punitive damages, attorney fees, costs, expenses and interest. She is represented by attorney John Pat Parsons of Lindsay, Lindsay & Parsons in Beaumont.
