JC suit over rear-end collision settles

BEAUMONT – A suit brought after a rear-end collision on Interstate 10 has been settled.

Tony Lapoint filed a lawsuit Oct. 4, 2013, in the District Court of Jefferson County 172nd Judicial District against Gary Fontenot, citing negligence.

The case was set to go to trial Jan. 11 but settled beforehand, according to a courthouse official.

According to the complaint, on April 26, Lapoint and Fontenot were traveling northbound in the 1200 block of I-10.

Lapoint says he started to slow down as traffic in front of him was slowing and Fontenot failed to slow down, rear-ending Lapoint's vehicle.

Fontenot answered the suit on Nov. 18, 2013, asserting a general denial.

Lapoint was seeking damages in an amount more than $200,000, but not more than $1,000,000.

Attorney John J. Brothers is representing him in the case.

District Court of Jefferson County Case No. E194867.
