Ex-employee accuses Van Alstyne school district of age discrimination

SHERMAN — A Grayson County woman is suing the Van Alstyne school district, alleging she was fired because of her age.

Deborrah Skaggs filed a lawsuit April 1 in the Sherman Division of the Eastern District of Texas against the Van Alstyne Independent School District, alleging age discrimination, discrimination, and wrongful termination.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff who was hired by the district in August 1998, experienced discrimination from principal Ryan Coleman and John Spies, the superintendent. The plaintiff, who was 62, alleges the district treated her differently than other younger employees until she was ultimately terminated in June 2015.

Skaggs seeks a trial by jury, back pay, lost wages and other employee benefits, actual damages, punitive/ exemplary damages, liquidated damages, interest, compensatory damages, all legal fees and any other relief the court deems just.
