Disabled physician accuses insurer of fraud

Contract 04

BEAUMONT — A disabled Texas family physician is suing an insurer and its parent company, alleging breach of contract and fraud.

Dr. Paul Redman Sr., filed a lawsuit July 28 in the Beaumont Division of the Eastern District of Texas against The Paul Revere Life Insurance and Unum Group Corp., doing business as Unum, alleging violation of the Texas Insurance Code.

According to the complaint, Redman has been subjected to financial harm, economic impact, worry, distress, and continuing economic and physical damage. The suit says he was forced to file for bankruptcy after years of a successful practice as a result of his practice closing due to his disability.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants wrongfully and repeatedly denied and refused to make payment on his claim, failed to conduct a reasonable investigation and failed to accept the undisputed evidence regarding Redman's medical condition and disability.

Redman seeks trial by jury, actual damages in excess of the minimum jurisdictional limits of the court, pre- and post-judgment interest, costs of suit, and all other relief to which he is entitled. He is represented by attorneys Michael Patrick Doyle and Patrick M. Dennis of Doyle Trial Lawyers in Houston.
