Rigger blames oil platform owners, operators for injuries

Oilrig 02

GALVESTON — A Louisiana rigger is suing oil platform owners and operators, alleging their negligence led to injuries for the plaintiff.

Dwayne Champagne filed a lawsuit Oct. 5 in the Galveston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Fieldwood Energy LLC, GOM Shelf LLC, Apache Corp. Eaton Oil Tools Inc., DLS LLC, D&L Salvage LLC and DLS & Marine Services LLC, alleging failure to provide a safe place to work.

According to the complaint, on Oct. 6, 2014, Champagne was employed as a rigger for Tetra Technologies Inc., working on defendants' platform at Mustang Island A111 in the Gulf of Mexico. The suit says Champagne was seriously injured during drill pipe operation being conducted on the platform, including left hand partial finger amputation and fracture.

The lawsuit says this led to physical pain and disability, loss of earnings and medical expenses.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to maintain the platform in a reasonably safe condition and free from hazards and failed to maintain control over the details of the work performed at the work site.

Champagne seeks trial by jury, damages exceeding the jurisdictional limits of the court, punitive damages, pre- and post-judgment interest, attorney fees, costs of suit and all other relief. He is represented by attorney Marcus R. Spagnoletti of Houston.
