Mother, sister blame medical care providers for relative's death

Medical malpractice 09

HOUSTON — A mother and sister are suing medical care providers, alleging their negligence led to the death of a relative.

Lena Savanah, individually and as estate representative for decedent Joseph Nicholson, and Ericka Palmer, as next friend of Leah Nicholson, a minor, filed a lawsuit Nov. 7 in Harris County District Court against Houston Northwest Medical Center, Iftikhar Ahmed PA, Dr. Bhushan Kukkalli, et al, alleging they failed to properly carry out their medical responsibilities.

According to the complaint, on Nov. 13, 2016, Joseph Nicholson went to Houston Northwest Medical Center due to sore throat, fever and blood in his stool. He died Nov. 18. The suit alleges an autopsy report states Nicholson's cause of death was acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

As a result of Nicholson death, the lawsuit states, the plaintiffs have suffered mental pain and anguish, medical bills, funeral and burial expenses. The plaintiffs allege the defendants did not order blood work for Nicholson, failed to diagnose him with AML and wrongly reported he died of acute respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.

Savanah and Palmer seek trial by jury, monetary relief of at least $1 million, penalties, court costs, expenses, pre- and post-judgment interest and all other relief to which they are entitled. They are represented by attorney Todd E. Webb of The Law Office of Todd E. Webb in Houston.
