HOUSTON — A machinist is suing an oil and gas equipment manufacturer, alleging that the company maintained a racially hostile work environment.

Elexander Tarver filed a complaint on Dec. 21, in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against National Oilwell Varco, alleging that the company violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. At one point, Tarver found a mock-up of a man dangling from a noose in the company's shop, the complaint said.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff said he was subjected to continued harassment by his co-workers. On March 20, 2014, he was terminated from his employment in retaliation for complaining about hostile work conditions and unequal treatment, the complaint said. The plaintiff holds National Oilwell Varco responsible because the defendant allegedly subjected him to discrimination, harassment, adverse employment actions, retaliation and constructive termination.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks award for back pay, reinstatement, compensatory and punitive damages, attorney's fees, costs and other relief to which he may be entitled. He is represented by Alan L. Quiles of The Quiles Law Firm PC in Boca Raton, Fla.
