Customer blames Star Furniture for fall on stairs

HOUSTON — A Harris County customer is suing a furniture store, alleging negligence in keeping a premises safe to avoid injuries.

Vernelle Arnold of Houston filed a complaint April 18 in Harris County Circuit Court against Star Furniture Company, alleging violation of the applicable standard of care as expected from a business establishment.

According to the complaint, on May 5, 2015, Arnold was at the defendant's property on Barker Springs Road in Houston where she had encountered a salesperson who refused to provide her with discount she was entitled from an unsolicited coupon from Star. 

While both individuals were descending the stairwell from the second floor to the first floor, the suit says, Arnold fell on the stairs, resulting in physical injuries. 

The plaintiff alleges Star Furniture because the defendant failed to keep the property in a safe condition, failed to routinely inspect, repair and maintain the premises and failed to properly supervise its employees in the performance of their job duties.

Arnold seeks trial by jury, monetary relief between $200,000 and $1 million plus pre -judgment interest, costs of suit, and all other just relief. She is represented by attorney William B. Underwood, III of Underwood Jones Scherrer, PLLC in Houston.
