BEAUMONT – Three high school coaches are accused of using excessive exercise as punishment and causing injuries to a student athlete.

Lorence Richard, individually and as next friend of minor LPR, and Melody Richard filed a complaint on Sept. 12 in the Jefferson County District Court against Coach Marcus Zarosky, Coach Cris Stump and Coach Kane Harris alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on Jan. 5, 2016, LPR was a 16-year-old student at Hampshire Fannet High School. The suit states that LPR was notified that the locker rooms were not cleaned to the coaches' satisfaction before winter break, so he and other students were required to do squat jumps for the nearly hour-long class period as punishment. The suit states LPR and had to do squat jumps again the next day for the class period.

The plaintiffs allege that LPR was taken to Memorial Herman Baptist Hospital emergency room on Jan. 7, 2016, because of extreme pain and was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a condition caused by excessive exercise. LPR is still receiving treatment for the condition, the suit states.

The plaintiffs hold Zarosky, Stump and Harris responsible because the defendants allegedly subjected their athletes to excessive exercise as punishment.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek monetary relief of more than $200,000 but not more than $1 million and such other relief to which they are entitled. They are represented by David P. Wilson of Provost & Umphrey Law Firm LLP in Beaumont.
