BEAUMONT – A widow recently filed a benzene lawsuit against Chevron USA and Texaco.

Gladys Wojcik, surviving spouse of Paul Wojcik, filed the suit Oct. 23 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, Paul worked for the defendants and was exposed to benzene. As a result, he developed leukemia and died on Aug. 23.

The suit alleges the defendants knew for decades that benzene could cause cancer and still allowed employees to work around benzene products without warning or proper training.

The plaintiff is suing for exemplary damages.

Provost Umphrey attorney Keith Hyde represents her.

Judge Kent Walston, 58th District Court, has been assigned to the case.

Case No. A-200845
