GALVESTON – A Pasadena man of African and Indian descent alleges his age and race were factors in his termination from a home improvement store.

Shazid Ali filed a complaint on Dec. 18, 2017, in the Galveston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Home Depot USA Inc. and The Home Depot Inc. alleging that the former employers violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff, 62, worked for the defendants for more than 20 years and was assistant store manager at the Little York store in Houston. The suit states the plaintiff's supervisor is a Caucasian man who was also younger than the plaintiff, and that the supervisor frequently "taunted" the plaintiff about his accent and age. He was later terminated on Aug. 8, 2016, after he had previously filed complaints over the treatment, the suit states.

The plaintiff holds Home Depot USA Inc. and The Home Depot Inc. responsible because the defendant allegedly subjected him hostile work environment and disparate treatment based on his race, retaliated against him and terminated his employment without explanation.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory and punitive damages, attorneys’ fees and costs and such other lawful and equitable relief. He is represented by Connor Throckmorton and Bruce A. Coane of Coane & Associates PLLC in Houston.
