BEAUMONT – An African-American man alleges his race was a factor in his termination from a Beaumont business.

John C. Smith filed a complaint on Jan. 11 in the Jefferson County District Court against Best Buy Stores LP, et al. alleging that they violated the Civil Rights Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Oct. 22, 2015, he was terminated for alleged violation of certain company policies. He alleges other non-African-American and/or non-minority employees in similar positions alleged to have violated similar policies were not terminated.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks monetary relief of more than $100,000 but less than $200,000 and all other and further relief to which he may be entitled. He is represented by Steve Parkhurst of Dies & Parkhurst LLP in Orange and Michael Catt of Catt Law Firm PC in Orange.
