SHERMAN – A Dallas man claims a mishap with a cot at a REI-Co-op store in Plano earlier this year caused him to lose a finger.

Michael Spracklen filed a lawsuit against REI in Sherman federal court on Apr. 7, pinning the incident in question on the Kent, Wash.-based sporting goods retailer.

Spracklen explains that he sat on a Kingdom Cot when the product gave way. The cot’s frame purportedly trapped his finger and eventually caused the digit from “approximately the top knuckle upwards” to be ripped off.

Court papers assert the defendant bore responsibility for the design, manufacturing, testing, marketing, and assembly of the cot in question.

Consequently, Spracklen seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

He is represented by Stewart D. Matthews of Ennis.
