Pier 1 customer seeks $1 million after chair fell off display and struck her

Lawsuits

HOUSTON – A Montgomery County woman alleges she suffered a traumatic brain injury when a chair fell on her at a store in The Woodlands.

Judy Laird filed a complaint on Aug. 20 in the Harris County District Court against Pier 1 Imports US Inc. and Demetrio Rodriguez alleging negligence and other counts.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Sept. 26, 2017, she was looking at the home decor items at a Pier 1 store when an improperly stacked chair fell 8 feet and struck the plaintiff's head and body. She alleges sustained a traumatic head injury as a result.

The suit states Rodriguez was attempting to stack a heavy chair on top of a display, which caused another chair to fall and strike the plaintiff.

The plaintiff holds Pier 1 Imports US Inc. and Rodriguez responsible because the defendants allegedly failed to timely inspect the premises in order to discover any dangerous condition and in order to correct any unsafe practices and failed to properly stack merchandise.

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief of no less than $1 million and such other and further relief to which she may be justly entitled. She is represented by R. James Amaro and Matthew A. Elwell of The Amaro Law Firm in Houston.
