HOUSTON — A Montgomery County woman is suing AT&T, alleging she was harassed for debt collection.

Denise Askea filed a complaint April 1 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, doing business as AT&T Texas, and Diversified Consultants Inc., alleging violation of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act, the Texas Debt Collection Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

According to the complaint, Askea sold her home in November 2016 and transferred her personal TV and Internet services with AT&T to her new home. Askea says her account was in good standing when she transferred services.

The suit says the plaintiff began to receive demands from AT&T, beginning Jan. 5, 2017, stating her bill was was more than $500. Askea alleges she continued to receive demands from the defendant through February 2019, even though the requests were inaccurate and that the plaintiff's credit score was negatively impacted by the defendant's reporting of fees owed.

Askea seeks trial by jury, actual and statutory damages, attorney fees and all other just and prope relief. She is represented by attorney Trista M. Johnson of the Law Office of Trista Johnson in Conroe.
