Seaman alleges company's negligence led to 13-foot fall aboard ship

HOUSTON — A Mississippi seaman alleges an energy company's negligence led to injuries aboard a vessel.

Demarcus John filed a complaint April 17 in the Harris County District Court against Helix Energy Solutions Group Inc., alleging negligence and unseaworthiness.

According to the complaint John was working as a roughneck about the vessel Q5000 on Jan. 7 in the Gulf of Mexico. The suit says John fell more than 13 feet when an appurtenance gave way. John alleges he suffered injuries to his ankle, lower extremities and back due to the defendant's negligence, failure to provide proper equipment and failure to take precautions for the plaintiff's safety.

John seeks more than $1 million in damages, attorney fees, interest and all other just relief. He is represented by attorneys Marcus R. Spagnoletti and Eric J. Rhine of Spagnoletti Law Firm in Houston.
