HOUSTON — A white law professor is suing historically black Texas Southern, alleging he was discriminated against due to his race.
Walter T. Champion filed a complaint Aug. 13 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Texas Southern University, alleging racial discrimination and violation of the Texas Whistleblower Statute.
According to the complaint, Champion, a fully tenured law professor was employed by Texas Southern's Thurgood Marshall School of Law and was always an exemplary employee. The suit states the plaintiff, who began teaching at TSU in 1984, has been denied lucrative positions due to his race and, as a result of this discriminatory treatment, Champion has suffered monetary injury.
Champion seeks trial by jury, compensatory damages, attorney fees, judgment, back pay of $30,000 for each of the past eight years and all other just relief. He is represented by himself and attorney Andrew J. Cobos of Houston.
