Lawsuits

GALVESTON — A Galveston ship worker is suing Del Monte, alleging he was injured when he fell through an open hatch aboard a vessel.

Lionel Richardson filed a complaint Aug. 29 in Galveston County District Court against Del Monte Fresh Produce (Texas) Inc., and Del Monte Fresh Produce NA Inc., alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on May 27, Richardson was working as a crewmember aboard the M/V Star Leader. The suit alleges another crewmember opened hatch No. 2 on the A deck and caused Richardson to fall through it. The plaintiff says he sustained serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to the University of Texas Medical Branch.

The plaintiff alleges Del Monte's negligence in operating the ship's hatches caused Richardson to sustain pain and suffering, mental anguish, disfigurement and loss of earnings.

The plaintiff seeks trial by jury, monetary relief of more than $1 million, interest, attorney fees, court costs and all just relief. He is represented by attorneys Ryan Zehl and Matthew O. Greenberg of Zehl & Associates PC in Houston.
