HOUSTON —Two Harris County patients are suing a medical team, alleging their epidural steroids were injected incorrectly, resulting in severe medical complications.

John Henderson and Curtis Simpson filed a complaint Aug. 21 in Harris County District Court against Dr. Omar Vidal, Advanced Interventional Pain LLC, Precision Medsurg Management Consultants LLC and Americana Injury Clinic Inc., alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, Henderson came to the office of Vidal on Jan. 29, 2018, for treatment of pain in his back and leg. The plaintiff said he was scheduled for a lumbar epidural steroid injection and was told to call following the procedure with any concerns. Henderson alleges he went to Memorial Hermann Hospital Feb. 6, 2018, with complaints of back pain and weakness in his lower extremities as well as fever and difficulty walking.

The suit alleges Henderson was diagnosed as having an epidural abscess and had to have a drainage of the infected material carried out. The plaintiff said he eventually developed a staph infection and had to stay in the hospital until Feb. 16, 2018. The suit states he was discharged with diagnoses of spinal abscess, bacteremia, acute pain, acute diastolic heart failure, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, hypertension, kidney disease as well as numerous other complications.

The complaint also states that Simpson came to Vidal's office Jan. 29, 2018 and underwent a procedure for bliateral L5-S1 lumbar facet injection with local anesthetic and steroids. Following the procedure, the plaintiff said he went to Memorial Hermann Hospital on Feb. 6, 2018 with complaints of back pain, fever chills and delirium.

An examination allegedly showed Simpson was in ketoacidosis and had an epidural abscess. The plaintiff said he suffered from sepsis and multi-system organ failure and had to have a lumbar laminectomy. The plaintiff alleges he developed acute kidney failure and tubular necrosis and had to have feeding tubes placed, and developed a sacral wound. The suit states Simpson was discharged to a nursing facility March 16, 2018.

Hnderson and Simpson seek between $200,000 and $5 million, trial by jury, attorney fees, court costs, interest and all just relief. They are represented by attorneys Steven R. Davis and John A. Davis Jr. of Davis & Davis in Houston.
