HOUSTON — A man who slipped on charcoal that was left on the floor of a Houston Family Dollar store and suffered injuries is claiming negligence.

Tyrone Bates filed a complaint Aug. 6 in Harris County District Court against Dollar Tree Stores Inc., and Family Dollar Stores of Texas LLC alleging negligence.

Bates claims in his suit that while shopping at the Family Dollar store located on Imperial Valley Drive in Houston on Jan. 6, 2020, he suffered serious injuries after slipping on some charcoal that was on the floor.

He alleges he suffered aggravation of a pre-existing condition, impairment, disfigurement, lost wages and incurred medical care expenses as a result of the slip and fall. Bates further alleges the defendant's negligence or failing to eliminate the dangerous condition on the floor, failing to properly maintain their premises and for failing to warn of the hazard. He claims the defendant also failed to properly train and supervise its employees who failed to inspect the premies and remove the dangerous condition.

Bates seeks monetary relief between $250,000 and $1 million, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. He is represented by John Zaid, Ryan Bill and Gregory Garvin of John K. Zaid & Associates in Houston.
