Worker injured at Universal Steel America site claims negligence

HOUSTON — A worker injured at a Universal Steel America worksite in Houston claims she suffered injuries after tripping over a piece of misplaced metal. 

Laverne Brown filed a complaint Aug. 17 in Harris County District Court against Universal Steel America Inc., alleging negligence. 

Brown alleges in her complaint that she was at Universal Steel America's worksite on Richey Road in Houston on Oct. 18, 2020, when she tripped and fell on a "misplaced piece of metal. She claims as a result of her fall, she suffered physical impairment, disfigurement, loss of enjoyment of life as well as loss of earning capacity. In addition, Brown claims she has incurred medical expenses and mental anguish. Brown alleges Universal Steel America's negligence for failing to have a reasonably safe hazard-free work site, failed to protect or to properly supervise and train their employees. 

Brown seeks monetary relief between $200,000 and $1 million, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by M. Paul Skrabanek and Michael Grinsfelder of Pierce Skrabanek PLLC in Houston.
