HOUSTON — A passenger on a Harris County Metro Transit Authority claims the bus driver's sudden stop caused her to fall and strike her head.

Maria Alvarez filed a complaint Oct. 15 in Harris County District Court against Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County alleging negligence.

According to her complaint, Alvarez was entering a Metropolitan Transit Authority bus on Feb. 16, 2020. She alleges that as she walked and prepared to pay her bus fare towards the front of the bus, the driver slowed downed to approach a bus stop and when there were no passengers waiting at the stop, he sped up and then suddenly hit the brakes.

Alvarez claims she fell inside the bus and struck her head against the door and suffered injuries including physical disfigurement, impairment, lost wages and incurred medical expenses. She alleges that the defendant's driver failed to properly warn the bus was going to stop, was driving at an unsafe speed and improper distance and failed to keep passengers safely seated until reaching a full stop.

Alvarez seeks monetary relief between $250,000 and $1 million, interest and all other just relief. She is represented by Andres Rejas and Thaison Hua of Rejas, Hua & Hoang PLLC in Bellaire.
