HOUSTON — A couple claims their landlord's failure to properly replace an overheating refrigerator led to a fire in their apartment and their personal property being destroyed.

Prince Isu and Sandra Isu filed a complaint Oct. 18 in Harris County District Court against CITYR Brookfield LLC doing business as CITYR at Brookfield Apartments alleging negligence, premises liability and violation of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

The plaintiffs were residents of the defendant's apartment complex located on Wunderlich Drive in Houston on Aug. 27, 2020, according to their suit. They allege that the refrigerator in their apartment overheated and caused a serious fire that destroyed the apartment and their personal belongings.

They claim that the defendants knew the refrigerator was overheating and that instead of replacing the unit, they attempted to make repairs on several occasions and used unqualified personnel to repair the appliance. The plaintiffs further claim the defendants failed to adequately maintain the refrigerator and made false assurances about the repair efforts which prevented them from safely resolving the matter.

The Isus seek monetary relief between $250,00 and $1 million, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. They are represented by James Blackwell of The Blackwell Law Firm PLLC in Houston.
