HOUSTON - Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-18) recently introduced the “Leading Against White Supremacy Act of 2023,” which seeks to prevent and prosecute white supremacy inspired hate crimes.
H.R. 61 was introduced in the House on Jan. 9 and states that a “person engages in a white supremacy inspired hate crime when white supremacy ideology has motivated the planning, development, preparation, or perpetration of actions that constituted a crime…”
The bill states a conspiracy to engage in white supremacy inspired hate crime includes a person publishing material advancing white supremacy, such as hate speech published on social media.
The bill would give the Justice Department authority to conduct operations and activities, “and undertake other actions that it deems necessary and appropriate to interdict, mitigate, or prevent such action from culminating in violent activity.”
The bill currently has no cosponsors.
