The University of Houston Law Center’s Career Development Office kicked off the spring semester with its annual Government & Public Interest Table Talk. The event, held on January 24, brought together students, alumni, and representatives from about 50 local, state and national government agencies and nonprofit organizations to explore internship and employment opportunities in the public sector.

Law students met with potential employers to discuss career goals and learn about different practice areas. Participating organizations included Houston Methodist Hospital, the United States Marine Corps and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.

“This career fair is the source of the first legal internship for a lot of our 1L students,” said Bill Powers, director of judicial clerkship and externship programs at UHLC. “It’s their chance to speak to professionals from a wide variety of legal practices and a gateway to make connections.”

Students and organizations will now follow up with each other about internships and attorney positions, he added.

A highlight of the career fair was the involvement of Law Center alumni, who returned to recruit on behalf of their employers. Their participation was a testament to the strength of the UH Law Center’s professional network and its graduates’ dedication to career growth within the legal community.

The CDO’s upcoming events include a Litigation Lunch and Learn as well as Discourse Over Disputes: A Litigation Learning Event in February, and the Small and Midsize Firms Open House scheduled for March.
