Meet Alexandria Nakakura, 2L and learn more about her story at South Texas Law in this Student Spotlight by the Career Resource Center.
Why did you choose to attend South Texas College of Law Houston?
I chose STCL Houston for the advocacy program and the community.
Where are you working this summer?
This summer, I’ll be working at Christian Attar and Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner (Abraham Watkins).
How did you secure those opportunities?
I secured my internship at Christian Attar through the CRC’s On Campus Interviews. I had 16 interviews with 16 rejections. My last interview was with Christian Attar, and although I was discouraged, it ended up being the one that worked out! You just can’t give up. Marie always told me there is a place for everyone, and it’s true. I secured the position at Abraham Watkins through networking. I was terrified of networking, but it’s actually a great experience. It’s important to step outside of your comfort zone. That’s where you can find your biggest successes.
How did the Career Resource Center (CRC) help you successfully navigate that application process and your career path?
What didn’t they do? From creating my resume, to working on interview skills, they helped me every step of the way. Most importantly, Marie was my biggest supporter when I felt overwhelmed and insecure.
What are your career goals for the future?
I am committed to becoming a litigator. While my passion for criminal law has guided my path, I was eager to secure the opportunity to explore civil litigation this summer. This experience will broaden my exposure and deepen my understanding of the profession, working with distinguished firms renowned in the legal community.
What piece of advice would you share with future students going through recruitment?
Don’t give up and connect with the CRC as soon as you can. The recruitment process can be confusing, but the CRC will walk you through the steps and support you the entire way. It’s easy to get discouraged but nothing good ever comes from giving up.
Step outside of your comfort zone. Connect with everyone you can and say yes to every new opportunity you can. You don’t know what you are capable of until you try new things.
Which professors have influenced you and/or your career path the most?
Professor Andresen has influenced my career path. Her passion for criminal law is inspiring. Professor Vukadin’s kindness and writing advice will stay with me forever. Professor Nelson helped me to think outside the box and make challenging subjects fun.
What student organizations have you been involved with?
I am involved with the Advocacy Program. I will be competing in March at the 2025 Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition, and I am on the ADR sparring team.
How has the South Texas Law community supported your growth?
Everyone here has been supportive and added something to my perspective. Professors, staff, students; each has given me something that will help me be a better attorney.
What is something interesting about you we can’t learn from your resume?
I hosted an entertainment TV show. It only went to pilot, but I got to interview a lot of interesting people.
