A major telecommunications firm has sued League City, alleging negligence.
GTE Southwest Incorporated, doing business as Verizon Southwest, filed a lawsuit Dec. 26, 2014, in Galveston County District Court, against the city of League City, citing liability in damaged underground facilities.
According to the complaint,, on Aug. 12, 2013, the defendant struck and damaged GTE Southwest's s existing copper cable and conduit facilities while performing an excavation in Kemah using motor driven equipment.
League City failed to keep a proper lookout for the buried facilities, verify their precise location and depth, exercise reasonable care and protect existing structures, the suit states, and the incident created potential risks to public safety by the interruption of services.
The complaint alleges breach of duties, failure to train staff and observe industry standards.
GTE Southwest seeks: compensation of $24,455.05 to cover repair costs; attorney fees; expenses; and costs. It is represented by attorney David Redford of Brown Sims in Houston.
