Woman blames Ford for fire, damages

A Jefferson County woman has sued Ford Motor Company, alleging negligence in a 2013 fire.

Stephanie Payne filed a lawsuit Feb. 26 in Jefferson County District Court against Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Service Company, citing liability in a fire that destroyed her property in 2013.

According to the suit, on Sept. 24, 2013, the plaintiff’s vehicle and residence, at 2455 Ranier St., Jefferson County, were damaged from a fire traced to a faulty speed control deactivation device installed in her 2001 Ford Expedition. The device leaked and caused a fire inside the parked vehicle, which in turn spread to her house, the suit said.

The complaint cites gross negligence, losses and costs, including, structural repair to the plaintiff’s house and carport, replacement of house contents, additional living expenses, replacement of her vehicle and mental anguish.

Payne seeks compensation between $200,000 and $1 million in punitive damages, attorney fees, expenses, and costs. She is represented by attorney John Parsons of Lindsay, Lindsay & Parsons in Beaumont.

Jefferson County District Court case number: D-196794.
