Woman sues Christus for refusing treatment

A diabetic woman is suing Christus Health for refusing to treat her. Karen Stoute filed her lawsuit with the Jefferson County District Court on March 28.

According to the plaintiff's petition, on Dec. 27, 2005, Stoute sought emergency medical treatment and arrived in the defendant's emergency room in "obvious distress," suffering from diabetes complications.

Stoute says in her suit that emergency room personnel refused to treat her and suggested she "leave the emergency room without treatment." Stoute does not say why the hospital refused to treat her.

She left and went to Baptist Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she received treatment.

By refusing her treatment, Stoute is claiming Christus violated the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act.

She is demanding a trail by jury.

Stoute is represented by Danny R. Scott, Jr. of Beaumont.

Court assignment is pending.
